Holler & Wold

Why Holler & Wold

When it came to naming our company, we wanted something that reflected the places we love.

Holler is a term deeply rooted in Appalachia. It's the local pronunciation of "hollow," a small valley nestled between mountains. A holler is more than a geographic feature—it's a place where people gather, where stories are shared, where families put down roots, and where community thrives. Holler felt like a natural way to honor the region and the culture that has welcomed us for so many years.

Wold is an Old English word meaning rolling uplands or gently elevated countryside. The term is a reference to the Cotswolds in England, another place that has our hearts. The Cotswolds are known for their picturesque villages, timeless charm, and deep sense of place—many of the same qualities we seek out when we travel and that we hope to recreate in our homes.

Together, Holler & Wold represent two landscapes, two traditions, and two places that have shaped our family's story: the rugged mountains of Appalachia and the rolling countryside of England.

More importantly, the name reflects our belief that the best places are not just beautiful—they create a sense of belonging. Whether you're gathering around a fire pit in West Virginia or exploring a village lane in the English countryside, we hope that when you stay with Holler & Wold, it feels like a place where you can slow down, reconnect, and make lasting memories with the people you love.

It's a name rooted in place, but ultimately it's about people, connection, and the feeling of coming home.

About Our Family

Our family lives in Washington, DC, and for years, we would escape to Berkeley Springs whenever we needed a break from the pace of everyday life. West Virginia has always had a special place in our hearts. Matt's mom was born in Huntington and still has family in the state.

What started as weekend getaways became a family tradition. We fell in love with the mountains, the small-town charm, the quiet mornings, and the way time seemed to slow down whenever we were here.

And every time we visited, we found ourselves having the same conversation:

"We need to have a place of our own here someday."

Holler Home is the realization of that dream. We created this home for our own family first—a place where grandparents, parents, children, and friends could gather under one roof. Every decision, from the dining table to the hidden speakeasy, was made with connection in mind.

Today, we're honored to share it with other families looking for the same thing we were searching for: a place to reconnect with family and friends in nature.

We hope you'll make yourself at home here.
